William Eggleston continues to live in his hometown of Memphis, where he was born in 1939. Eggleston is widely credited with helping to legitimize color photography as an artistic medium. His exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1976 is considered a historical landmark, and his work has been the subject of numerous publications and is represented in major collections around the world. In 2019, the Eggleston Art Foundation was established in Memphis to house the Eggleston Archive, facilitate research and support contemporary arts programming.
Sabelo Mlangeni was born in 1980 and lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he graduated from the Market Photo Workshop. His acclaimed series “Country Girls” presents an intimate portrait of queer life within the rural areas of Mpumalanga province. Highlighting scenes of exuberance and glamour alongside those of strife and grit, his black and white images portray and valorize the perspectives of individuals who identify with specific communities. His focused engagement renders the complex cultural identities found within contemporary South African society.
Ebecho Muslimova was born in 1984 in Dagestan, Russia and lives and works in New York City. Her art practice manifests a graphic trajectory of the personal and exposed, the comedic and the disquieting, and is centered around the artist’s alter ego, Fatebe, a bold and sexually liberated character. The works depict a persona shameless and free, exploring the world in ridiculous and impossible situations that revel in the celebration of carnal processes and bodily curiosity.
Spyros Rennt left his native Greece in 2011 to move to Berlin. A former computer engineer, Rennt’s photography documents his personal experiences with a lyricism that is applied equally to the banal and the ecstatic. Last year he released Another Excess, a book of photographs that offers Rennt’s unique insight into the creativity of queer parties, clubs and nightlife around the German capital.
