Led by the tireless efforts of the Tennessee Equality Project, advocates and activists from around the state let their voices be heard that discrimination against any of our members is not acceptable. The collective power of so many voices for equality helped stop the Bathroom Bill (HB 888/SB 771) from becoming the law of the land!
The Bathroom Bill would have forced all students at public elementary, middle, and high schools as well as public colleges and universities to use the bathroom coinciding with the gender assigned on their birth certificate. This would have created enormous barriers for transgender children, teens, young adults, and their families.
On Tuesday people gathered with Tennessee Equality Project at OUTMemphis and in locations all over the state to speak passionately on the consequences of this dangerous legislation. Organizations like National Center for Transgender Equality joined the fight, while people all over the state called and emailed their legislators to make it clear that this is not the type of policy we want.
On Wednesday the motion to vote on the Bathroom Bills was never seconded, effectively stopping the bill’s progress for at least a year. Themessage came through loud and clear: do not target our most vulnerable citizens!
