Latinx Awareness Week at OUTMemphis ran from October 8th through the 12th, and culminated in the Baile Del Colibri, or the Dance of the Hummingbird. This culminating event was both a celebration and a chance for OUTMemphis and the Latinx Awareness Week Planning Committee to honor some local legends in the LGBTQ Latinx community.

The First Annual Hummingbird Award categories were:

The Pioneros (The Pioneer): The pioneer is an individual over 30 years of age who marks a before and an after. This is a person who has paved the way for the future generation.

The Altruismo (The Altruist): Altruism is the belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concerns for the well-being of others, even if it’s at one’s own expense. The Altruist is an individual under 30 years of age who has demonstrated this trait in abundance for members of the LGBTQ Latinx community.

The Aliado (The Ally): An ally is a heterosexual, cisgender person who supports equal rights, gender equality, LGBTQ+ social movements, and challenges homophobia and transphobia.

The Estrella Audaces (The Bold Star): The Bold Star is a Latinx LGBTQ community member who has, through their life and their activism, demonstrated bravery, a bold attitude, and a fierce warrior spirit.
