May is LGBT Seniors Celebration Month, and we are planning a series of events with a little something for everyone. Our schedule of events was developed based on your feedback, so thank you for taking our March survey!
May will include a little something for everyone. Whether you enjoy fine art, are trying to stay fit and flexible, want to keep active and on the road, need some legal assistance, or just want to spend time with some old and new friends—the LGBTQ Seniors Celebration Month has something for you.
LGBTQ Seniors Celebration Month Schedule of Events
- PNA Senior Expo, Tuesday, May 1st, 9:00a-2:00p, Agricenter International (7777 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, TN 38120): Join us at the Senior Expo! OUTMemphis Senior Services Committee will be set up at the Senior Expo, a one-stop shop for seniors where businesses, non-profits, and government organizations will be connecting seniors to needed services. The Senior Expo is put on by the Professional Network on Aging. Parking and admission are both free, so make sure you stop by our table. Let us know you are coming by RSVPing on facebook.
- Estate Planning: Unique Considerations for LGBTQ People, Wednesday, May 2nd, 5:30p-7:00p, OUTMemphis: Local LGBTQ attorney Susan Mackenzie will join us to talk about legal matters critical to LGBTQ individuals and their families, how to use online legal resources, and will answer questions about estate and health care planning. People can ask questions about matters like the difference between a revocable vs irrevocable trust, how to go about handling the legal paperwork, and so on. It will be an informative event for sure. - Seniors OUT for Coffee with Guest Speaker Terrie Kirksey, Sunday, May 6th, 11:30a-3:00p, OUTMemphis: Join us for our monthly coffee club. This month we will be joined by Terrie Kirksey, Assistant Director of Creative Aging. Coffee and refreshments will be provided, so please RSVP on facebook or via email.
- Colorcopia: LGBTQ Art Class for Seniors, Thursday, May 10th, 11:00a-12:00p, OUTMemphis: Colorcopia is an art class put on by artists from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Participants will learn how to recreate a piece of art in the Dixon’s collection, gaining new artistic skills in the process. Join us for our last class of the year and snag a free pass to the Dixon! - LGBTQ Senior Celebration, Saturday, May 12th, 7:00p-9:00p, OUTMemphis: Join us for a House Party at OUTMemphis! We’ll be jamming to music from the 60s and 70s, reminiscing about the good ole days, and having fun with old and new friends. Party refreshments will be available, so please RSVP on facebook or via email.
- Seniors OUT and About at the Dixon, Tuesday, May 15th at 9:45a, Dixon Gallery and Gardens (4339 Park Ave, 38117): We will be meeting at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in the lobby at 9:45am for a free guided tour. This event is free for all LGBTQ senior participants. Tickets are limited, so please RSVP on facebook or via email.
- Tai Chi for Health Classes for LGBTQ Seniors, First Class, Tuesday, May 22nd, 11:00a-12:00p, OUTMemphis: We are kicking off a summer series for health with Tai Chi. Tai Chi is low impact exercise perfect for maintaining and increasing flexibility. Maxine Strawder, a certified Tai Chi for Health instructor, will kick off the series on Tuesday, May 22nd. Classes will continue, so check out our facebook event or email us for additional days and times.
- AARP Safe Driver Course, Tuesday May 29th and Wednesday, May 30th, 5:00p-9:00p, OUTMemphis: The AARP Safe Driver course is an 8-hour class that, once complete, can be used to lower your car insurance rate.
OUTMemphis is picking up the bill, so you can take the course for free! All participants must be 50 or older, must be able to stay for both the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions, and have a valid driver’s license. For more information click here or send us an email.
