Position Title:  Chief Financial Officer

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Status: Full-Time, Exempt from overtime

Work Site: This position works in-person across our three facilities in Memphis, TN with a primary office.

Compensation
: $70,000 – $90,000 annual salary commensurate with experience, plus health benefits, professional development, and competitive paid time off.

Reporting to the chief executive officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer will define the process and implement infrastructure and systems needed to support substantial growth over the next 3-5 years at OUTMemphis, the largest and longest-running LGBTQ+ organization in Tennessee. Due to the small scale of the organization, serving approximately 2000 individuals with a 2M annual budget, the Chief Financial Officer wears many hats. This position will manage and refine streamlined financial systems to support the sustainability and efficacy of OUTMemphis’s administrative core. The Chief Financial Officer manages the Operations department, which consists of a full-time internal position alongside 3-4 independent contractors. As a member of the executive team, this position is an amazing opportunity to be involved in strategic planning, organization evaluation and development, and planning for our financial, physical and programmatic expansion. In keeping with the OUTMemphis mission, this position will collaborate with all programs and service areas with a priority focus on utilizing funds for effective and equitable support for LGBTQ+ individuals who need it most.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management

  • Review and approve preparation and finalization of monthly and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for OUTMemphis’s Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Manage accounting department, currently staffed by an external team of three, and provide regular oversight of accountant services, including contract review, external and annual audits, and recommend strategic changes to accounting department.
  • In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Programs Officer, and Board of Directors, create and implement an annual budget and budget methods for the organization’s approximately $2M annual operating budget.
  • Design impactful strategies and monitor all project management for finance and budget responsibilities for 1.8M-2M annual operating budget and all capital projects.
  • Oversee and collaborate with the development team and other departments for budgeting, financial forecasting, and cash flow for administration, existing programs, and proposed new projects.
  • Hire and retain support staff and contractors as needed in the future.
  • Coordinate all audit activities, including vetting and supervising external auditor.
  • Attend Board Meetings and lead monthly Finance Committee meetings with financial reports and collaborate regularly with Board representatives and volunteers.
  • Support board members in understanding the organization’s financial health

Administrative Leadership and Management

  • Serve as a business partner to the CEO on the organization’s financial, budgeting, and administrative processes—including HR, payroll, benefits functions, operations, IT—with an eye to continuously developing and improving systems.
  • Serve as constructive leader, communicator, and coach to all full-time staff on matters of financial health, budgetary practices, and administrative and operational projects.
  • Manage—including hiring and contracting—full-time operations staff positions, and external support including IT, property management, payroll, and additional staff and contractors as determined by this position.
  • In collaboration with Chief Executive Officer, Chief Programs Officer, and Board of Directors, create and implement ongoing security and facility plans for sites and programs.
  • As a member of the Directors team, support institutional initiatives and help senior leadership guide the OUTMemphis staff and operations.
  • In collaboration with the Directors team, support staff needs and culture as part of a collaboration-driven, equity-based leadership structure.

 

CORE COMPETENCIES 

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree AND/OR 10-years’ experience in nonprofits or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 5-years experience in manager level finance or accounting, with nonprofit experience.
  • Experience with government-funded projects and contracts strongly preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising department(s), programs, or operations, with the ability to measure success, provide assessments, and lead goal-oriented projects.
  • Must have minimum 2-years’ experience with organizations or projects pertaining to: community service, public health, youth development, civic engagement, housing and homelessness, and/or queer and trans advocacy.
  • Experience working with volunteers in any capacity.
  • Knowledgeable and sensitive to the issues affecting LGBTQIA2S+ questioning youth and adults.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a hands-on environment and maximize resources.
  • Demonstrated professional leadership on issues of racial, socio-economic, ability, and age disparities and capacity to speak towards cultural intersectionality.
  • Must be able to collaborate and work with diverse constituencies in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Must have strong customer-service instincts and verbal communication skills.
