Position Title: Director of Development
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Work Site: This position works in-person across our three facilities in Memphis, TN with a primary office. Flexible time and working location, including occasional weekend and evening hours for events.
Compensation: $65,000 – $75,000 annual salary, plus health benefits, professional development, and competitive paid time off.
The Director of Development serves as OUTMemphis’s fundraising leader, directing short- and long-term strategic goals for stewardship, revenue, external communications, and donor strategies. This position develops, implements, and monitors the annual fundraising plan of the organization, including donor relations, direct appeals, digital strategies, and planned giving. This position manages the Development & Communications team, including staff, consultants, and interns, who collectively executive all public and private support for the organization alongside communications and event strategies. The Director of Development builds overall strategy for the annual fund development in conjunction with our Strategic Plan and all future organizational goals and values. The Director of Development will support and assist the efforts of OUTMemphis’s upcoming capital campaign which is led by external consultants, the CEO, and the Board of Directors.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, and Development staff, create and implement an annual fundraising plan for the organization’s approximately $2M annual operating budget.
- Design impactful strategies and monitor all project management for a 360-degree support for OUTMemphis’s programs and mission, including individual, corporate, foundation, in-kind, and government revenue.
- Manage the Development & Communications Manager, inclusive of monitoring their deliverables and annual goals, providing coaching and cultivation, and coordinating PR, graphic design, and digital strategy contractors.
- Supervise donor database management and creation of timely and accurate reporting to support fundraising initiatives.
- Execute and continually improve internal department systems and practices.
- Support the planning and implementation of programming and partner events.
- Design and implement a major gifts strategy and act as lead manager of OUTMemphis’s major giving program in active partnership with the Chief Executive Officer.
- Identify, pursue, cultivate, and enhance relationships with private foundations and corporate funders of all gift size in support of funding needs.
- Attend Board Meetings and lead bi-monthly Development Committee meetings and collaborate regularly with Board representatives and volunteers.
- Set individual and department goals on an annual and quarterly basis to ensure 360-degree support for OUTMemphis’s programs and mission, continually improving departmental systems in line with existing workflows.
- As a member of the Directors team, support institutional initiatives and help senior leadership guide the OUTMemphis staff and operations.
- In collaboration with the Directors team, support staff needs and culture as part of a collaboration-driven, equity-based leadership structure.
- Manage the production of supporter communications, including direct mail and email appeals, invitations, announcements, and promotions for target donor populations
Core Competencies
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree AND/OR 5-years’ experience in nonprofits or equivalent preferred.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising department(s), programs, or operations, with the ability to measure success, provide assessments, and lead goal-oriented projects.
- Must have minimum 3-years’ experience in any of the following: community service, public health, youth development, civic engagement, housing and homelessness, and/or queer and trans advocacy.
- Experience working with volunteers in any capacity.
- Knowledgeable and sensitive to the issues affecting LGBTQIA2S+ questioning youth and adults.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a hands-on environment and maximize resources.
- Demonstrated professional leadership on issues of racial, socio-economic, ability, and age disparities and capacity to speak towards cultural intersectionality.
- Must be able to collaborate and work with diverse constituencies in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Must have strong customer-service instincts and verbal communication skills.
