OUTMemphis has been chosen to be a recipient of donated technology from PowerOn!

OUTMemphis is excited to announce that we have been chosen as one of six new community partners of PowerOn, a project that refurbishes slightly used technology and distributes it to LGBTQ folks in need.

PowerOn is a wonderful initiative that collects slightly used or old technology, refurbishes it to get it into proper working order, and then partners with agencies like OUTMemphis to place that technology into the hands of LGBTQ youth in need. In today’s world of technology, being without access to technology can be severely detrimental.

From their website:

OVER 650,000 HOMELESS LGBTQ YOUTH SLEPT ON AMERICA’S STREETS LAST NIGHT.

THAT IS EQUAL TO 40% OF ALL HOMELESS YOUTH ON AMERICA’S STREETS

MANY ENDING UP HOMELESS AFTER COMING OUT TO UNSUPPORTIVE FAMILIES.

As a result of being kicked out, LGBTQIA youth become literally and figuratively disconnected.  This disconnection increases rates of suicide and makes finding access to safe housing, healthcare, and employment challenging.

Because of this, PowerOn has chosen to help supply OUTMemphis’s upcoming Youth Emergency Shelter with technology, allowing LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness the opportunity to interface with the world to help with employment, housing, socialization, and other key resources.

We are thankful for this opportunity, and we know our youth services clients are as well. THANK YOU POWERON!
